2024 Cliffe Castle Bee Blog #17
Anthony and I checked the bees this morning (2nd September), the last inspection before they go to their winter quarters at the ABKA Apiary. The little colony continues to grow, with our new queen now laying over 6 frames.
We will nurse them through the winter in a double polystyrene nucleus box that takes 12 frames in total. All 6 frames with brood will be placed in the bottom box, with stores (food) above them in the top box. The challenges of this year’s “summer” have resulted in a smaller than usual colony to take into winter, but they should do well in the better insulated hive.
This is a picture of one type of polystyrene nucleus box. The one we will use is slightly different:
Tomorrow is your last chance to meet a Beekeeper by the Hive (1.30 to 3.30pm). Gill and possibly Mike will be available to answer any questions you may have and point out what’s happening on the frames. This is also your last chance to suggest a name for our new queen. Just tell the museum staff by the entrance what you think she should be called. If you leave your name and age, you will get a mention in the last Bee Blog here.
Next Monday evening, Steve and I will be collecting the bees from Cliffe Castle to take them to their winter quarters. We hope to bring them back in time for the Easter holidays in 2025, weather permitting.
